Plastics 101

Plastics 101 is a free online course of introductory plastics training designed for individuals who are potential plastics employees, newly hired employees, personnel in support roles for plastics companies, and personnel from supporting organizations to the industry. This course covers information on polymeric materials, rheology, and various polymer processing techniques, with review questions, and should take no more than three hours to complete for the average learner.

Penn State Erie The Behrend College
Plastics 001 is an introductory plastics survey course that provides an introduction to the fundamentals of plastics materials and processes. The material is comprised of individual course modules for incorporation into existing courses or for use as an integral three-credit course. The course material is free and available to high schools and community colleges to create interest in the plastics industry and in careers in the plastics field.

Penn State Erie The Behrend College
Plastics 205 is a three-credit introductory course, designed for Web-based delivery. Credits earned can be applied to the associates or baccalaureate degree in Plastics Engineering Technology offered by Penn State Erie.

This course provides an introduction to the plastics industry including the fundamental aspects of plastic materials. Common material fabrication processes are also covered along with an overview of how the chemical structure of polymers influences their mechanical and flow properties. Students interface with their instructor using Penn State’s ANGEL content management system through e-mail, discussion boards, and chat rooms.
